Schlagen Sie eine KorrekturThis charming little museum commemorates Gaetano Donizetti, who was born in Bergamo in 1797 and -- little wonder, given the romance of his boyhood surroundings -- became one of Italy's most acclaimed composers of opera. Fans can swoon over his sheet music, piano, and other memorabilia and see the deathbed where he succumbed to syphilis in 1848. Thus inspired, you can make the pilgrimage to the humble house where he claimed to have been born in a cellar, the Casa Nateledi Gaetano Donizetti, Via B. Canale 14 (tel. 035-399-432), a rural street that descends the hillside from the Porta Sant'Alessandro on the western edge of the city. It's open Saturday and Sunday only 11am to 6:30pm (donations requested).
