Für einen Architektur-Laien, der durch die Vororte Mantuas fährt, ist der Palazzo del Te, ein isoliert stehendes viereckiges Gebäude, ein einfacher und unmittelbarer Eindruck zu den Grundlagen des Manierismus als Reaktion auf den Baustil der Hochrenaissance. Er bricht einige Regeln der klassischen Renaissancearchitektur, erscheint aber gleichzeitig den Grundregeln zu entsprechen, wie sie durch Leon Battista Albertis De Re Aedificatoria ein Jahrhundert zuvor festgelegt wurden.
