This quite modern museum is truly a learning center. While hiking in our group visited the museum on a recovery day and then returned at the end of our stay.If only other museums were as so good I would become a less reluctant visitor.
This small museum serves up a great mix of artifacts, visual splendor, and science about the culture and resources of the region. If you are hiking in the Mercantour Park, it’s a must see either before or after your trek to the rock engravings. A virtual Shepard tells fascinating legends and history in multiple languages including English. A wall sized projection flies you over the southern part of the park with dramatic and dizzying effect. Guided virtual tours of the two stone etching areas orient in French, Italian and English. Kid friendly. Dioramas explain prehistoric and historic life in the region. Nice gift shop with publications and gifts. Also has research facility for academics. Some French helps with details about the dioramas, but not necessary to enjoy this thoughtful and original deep dive into local culture and science. We went back after first visit to dig deeper into this fascinating region on the border between France and Italy.
We drove from Nice to Torino and decided to take a scenic route through part of the Mercantour Park. The museum is in a quaint little town. The exhibits show the history of the region. Most of the information about each exhibit is written in Italian and French, but there a number of exhibits with English explanations. If you have young children you should bring them here.Throughout the museum there are learning stations specifically designed for kids.
We visited the museum because it had excellent reviews. We were not disappointed. The entire family learned a lot in a very pleasant way as everything was displayed in a modern way. The little museum covers a lot and we were blessed with the extraordinary temporary exhibit.Every member of the staff was welcoming, helpful and pleased to share additional comments.
The explanation of the history and meaning of some of the primitive rock art was very useful. Having visited the Vallee des Merveilles some years ago, I had not really much idea of the background of this impressive art that has withstood the thousands of years being out in the open. The area is now much more protected than it used to be and I understand that people can't just climb through the rocks like they could before. In addition, this brings the art to people who can't or don't want to hike up the valley. The museum closes for lunch at 12.30pm but visitors coming up on the guided commentary Train des Merveilles from Nice that leaves there at 9.23 should have enough time to see everything in the hour or so before lunch. It is only five minutes or less walk from the station.
